Smart for-us pick-up

Smart has announced the for-us pick-up concept, which will debut at January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Smart For-Us (2012 Rendering) Rear Side

Longer and wider than the Smart fortwo, the for-us has a 900 mm (35.4 inches) cargo area - not exactly massive, but large enough to transport a pair of Smart ebikes with their front wheels removed.

The pick-up’s drivetrain is borrowed from the fortwo electric drive, which means zero emissions and a 73 bhp (55 kW / 74 PS) motor. That’s claimed to be enough for a top speed of over 75 mph (120 km/h), but there’s no word yet on likely range or recharge times for the 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Five-star Ford Ranger

The new generation Ford Ranger has become the first pick-up to be awarded a maximum five stars for safety by Euro NCAP.

Scores for the test model - a right-hand drive four-door Ranger Double Cab - were consistently high across all categories, with 96% achieved for adult occupants, 86% for child occupants and 71% for safety assist features.

But the most impressive accomplishment was 81% for pedestrian impact, which is significant because it disproves the idea that pick-ups can’t do well in that particular trial.

By contrast the Volkswagen Amarok, the only other pick-up so far assessed under the revised rating scheme, only managed a mediocre four stars when it was tested last year. Its marks were 86% for adult occupants, 64% for child occupants, 57% for safety assist and just 47% for pedestrian protection, all of which have since been easily outclassed by the Ford.

Other models that earned five stars in the latest evaluation round were the Audi Q3, BMW 1 Series, Chevrolet Captiva, Fiat Freemont, Hyundai Veloster, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Opel / Vauxhall Astra, Opel / Vauxhall Zafira Tourer, Lancia / Chrysler Thema and Toyota Yaris.

The Freemont, M-Class and Thema all received particular praise for having active bonnets that rise up when sensors detect a pedestrian impact.

New Vauxhall Combo prices

Vauxhall has confirmed prices and specifications for its new 2012 Combo van. Basically a rebadged Fiat Doblò, it’s a very different vehicle from the model it replaces.

Two versions will be available: the ‘L1’ is 4.39 m (14’4”) long, has a 1.82 m (5’11”) load length and its cargo capacity is 3.400 litres, while the same figures for the ‘L2’ are 4.74 m (15’6”), 2.17 m (7’1”) and 4,200 litres. Maximum payload can be either 750 kg (1,653 lbs) or 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs).

By contrast, the previous generation Combo had a load area that was 1.78 m (5’10”) long and it could carry up to 803 kg (1,770 lbs).

Vauxhall Combo (2012) Front Side

In addition to its extra carrying ability, the new version also enjoys a higher standard specification. Base variants feature anti-lock brakes, a full steel bulkhead, a CD / radio audio system and remote central door locking.

For those wanting more kit, the Sportive trim grade gets height adjustment for the driver’s seat, air conditioning, a nearside sliding door, lumbar support, wheel covers, metallic paint and body-colour bumpers and door mirror caps.

The options list is set to be fairly extensive too, and it includes cruise control, parking sensors, extra airbags, Bluetooth connectivity and additional side or rear glazing.

As previously announced, the 2012 Vauxhall Combo will be exclusively diesel-powered, with the engine line-up comprising 1.3 litre (88 bhp / 66 kW / 90 PS), 1.6 litre (88 bhp / 66 kW / 90 PS), 1.6 litre (103 bhp / 77 kW / 105 PS) or 2.0 litre (133 bhp / 99 kW / 135 PS) CDTi engines. All get a six-speed manual transmission, except for the 1.3 which makes do with one less ratio. The Tecshift automated five-speed gearbox will also be available on 1.6 CDTi models.

However, all of those improvements have come at a cost. Whereas UK prices for the old Combo started at £9,343 excluding VAT, those of the new version range from £14,703 to a hefty £18,203:

Transit SportVan returns

Last month saw the release of the Fiesta Centura special edition to mark Ford of Britain’s centenary. Now the commercial vehicle side of the business has joined in the celebrations, by producing another limited run of the Transit SportVan.

It’s the seventh interpretation of the SportVan theme since the original blue and white version debuted in 2007. This time around, the colour scheme is Moondust Silver metallic paintwork with a contrasting graphite finish for the bonnet stripes and 18” alloy wheels.

Ford Transit SportVan (2011) Front Side

Based on the short wheelbase, low roof Transit 260 with the 138 bhp (102 kW / 140 PS) 2.2 litre TDCi diesel engine, the SportVan certainly isn’t short of specification.

The exterior gets a body kit, front fog lights, extended wheel arches and twin exhausts. On the inside, there’s Bluetooth, cruise control, electric windows, powered and heated door mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a Sony DAB radio with CD player, air conditioning, tinted glass, automatic headlights and a leather steering wheel and gear knob.

Given such an extensive equipment list, it’s reassuring that a perimeter alarm also comes as standard. Buyers can further add to it by choosing satellite navigation, leather seats and a rear-view camera with dashboard monitor from the options list.

Just 180 examples of the latest Transit SportVan will be built, and pricing has been set at £24,486 on the road, excluding VAT. By contrast, the equivalent standard model costs £20,511.

Fiat Doblò Work Up

Fiat has introduced the Fiat Doblò Work Up. It’s a unique addition to the UK light commercial vehicle market, because the Work Up is a small van-derived drop-side truck.

In place of the usual van bodywork is a 2.30 m (7’ 6”) by 1.82 m (5’ 11”) cargo box that can carry payloads of up to 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs). Constructed from aluminium alloy sides with an anti-slip wooden floor, it conceals a secure storage compartment beneath and comes complete with a ladder rack, restraining hooks and a protective grille over the cab’s rear window.

Fiat Doblò Work Up (2011) Front Side

Two Euro 5 compliant MultiJet turbodiesel engines are available, both of which feature a particulate filter and start-stop system.

Likely to be the more popular is a 1.3 litre unit that develops 88 bhp (66 kW / 90 PS) and achieves 55.4 mpg (5.1 l/100km) on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions are a low 133 g/km, and prices start at £16,065.

The alternative for those wanting a bit more power is a 103 bhp (77 kW / 105 PS) 1.6 litre motor, which costs an extra £1,000. Despite the larger capacity, it still achieves a very reasonable 49.6 mpg (5.7 l/100km) while producing 150 g/km of CO2.

It’s expected that the Doblò Work Up will be very much a niche product, although Fiat reckons it should be particularly suited to users in the maintenance, construction and agriculture sectors.

Francesco Russiello, Marketing Product Manager for Fiat Professional, said: “The new Doblò Work Up is the latest evolution of a model designed to be top of its class in terms of performance and functional characteristics, its capability and ease of loading.

“Its low running costs, low fuel consumption with reduced operating costs, and equipment levels all combine with safety and comfort, to make this a commercial vehicle well worth consideration.”

Mia Microbus UK debut

Little-known manufacturer Mia Electric will be bringing its Microbus electric vehicle range to the UK for the first time next month. The occasion is the EcoVelocity motor show, which takes place at Battersea Power Station from 8th to 11th September.

The company is majority German-owned but has its production facility in Cerizay, France. Mia Electric sees the UK as a priority along with its two home markets, and it’s aiming for a build rate of 14,000 units per year by the end of 2012.

Mia Electric Microbus (2012) FrontMia Electric Microbus (2012) Front Side

Mia Electric Microbus (2012) Rear SideMia Electric Microbus (2012) Seat Layout

At least there won’t be any need to convert the Microbus to right-hand drive, because it has a central driving position. Three versions are available: a standard three-seat short wheelbase model, the longer four-seat ‘L’ and a van which has a 1,500 litre cargo capacity.

Remarkably, the Microbus weighs just 750 kg (1,653 lbs), with the longer models tipping the scales at 759 kg (1,673 lbs). Such lightness means that the top speed of 68 mph (110 km/h) can be achieved using a fairly puny 24 bhp (18 kW / 24 PS) electric motor. With its 12 kWh lithium ion phosphate battery pack, expected range is 75 to 80 miles (120 to 130 km).

Recharging from flat takes five hours, but the design of the battery also means that it can take short top-ups without any adverse long-term consequences.

UK prices for the Microbus will start from £27,000, although Mia Electric is saying that it will qualify for the government’s Plug-in Car Grant, which would reduce the cost by £5,000.

For the moment, however, the model isn’t included on the Department for Transport’s eligibility list, so that issue would definitely be worth checking before placing an order. Certainly the van version won’t be entitled to any grant, as commercial vehicles are specifically excluded from the scheme.

Defender gets new engine

Land Rover is planning on displaying an all-new Defender concept at the forthcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show, but it’ll also be taking the opportunity to reveal important updates to the current production version.

The most significant of these is a change in engine. Out goes today’s 2.4 litre diesel, which is to be replaced by a 2.2 litre unit equipped with a diesel particulate filter to meet EU5 emissions standards. It will use the existing six-speed manual gearbox.

Land Rover Defender (2012) 2.2 Engine and Transmission

Despite the slightly smaller capacity, the new engine’s power output of 120 bhp (90 kW / 122 PS) and maximum torque of 360 Nm (265 lb/ft) are unchanged.

Likewise, economy and CO2 emissions remain the same, which means 28.3 mpg (10.0 l/100km) on the combined cycle and 266 g/km for Defender 90 models. For the longer wheelbase 110 and 130 types, the figures are 25.5 mpg (11.1 l/100km) and 295 g/km.

Performance meanwhile is said to be largely similar, although top speed has been increased from 82 mph (131 km/h) to 90 mph (144 km/h).

Land Rover Defender 110 Station Wagon (2012) Front Side

Two new option packs are also being introduced. The first of these is the Off-Road Pack, which will have a price tag of £1,500 in the UK and consists of anti-lock brakes, an under-ride protection bar, a tow ball and heavy-duty wheels with MTR tyres. Secondly, there’s the £1,650 Comfort Pack, which includes electric windows, remote central locking, air conditioning and a CD player with aux-in facility.

Among the other enhancements are a full acoustic engine cover to improve refinement, standard tinted glass across the range and the option of a plain black hood for pick-up variants.

The 2012 Land Rover Defender goes on sale in the UK this November. Prices will start from £20,995 on the road.

2012 Ford H-D F-150

Ford has confirmed that the Harley-Davidson F-150 pick-up will remain in its range for 2012.

Changes for the new model year are restricted to the fitment of 22” aluminium wheels with painted accents, a White Platinum Tri-Coat colour option, revised body graphics and snakeskin leather for the interior.

Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 (2012) DashboardFord Harley-Davidson F-150 (2012) Side 1

Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 (2012) Side 2Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 (2012) Interior

Standard specification includes a 4.2” LCD ‘Productivity Screen’ (full marks to the marketing guys for coming up with that term) that sits between the speedometer and tachometer. Controlled via a five-way steering wheel-mounted button, it displays items like fuel consumption, off-road performance and towing information.

Also on the equipment list is a voice-activated satellite navigation system, remote starting, second row heated seats, a powered moonroof and SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

Being an F-150, features such as a live, leaf-sprung rear axle mean that technically things aren’t particularly advanced. Similarly, the engine is an iron-block, two valves per cylinder 6.2 litre petrol-powered V8 with a single overhead camshaft.

It does however manage to produce 411 bhp (306 kW / 416 PS) and a massive 588 Nm (434 lb/ft) of torque, although unsurprisingly the result is a prodigious thirst. With all-wheel drive, fuel economy is just 12 miles per US gallon (14.4 mpg imperial / 19.6 l/100km) on the City cycle, while the Highway rating is not much better at 16 mpg US (19.2 mpg imperial / 14.7 l/100km).

2012 Vauxhall Opel Combo

The new 2012 Combo van might look rather familiar, as it’s essentially a rebadged Fiat Doblò.

Not that that’s a bad choice of vehicle to use as a basis, though. The Turkish-built Doblò won the 2011 International Van of the Year award, and two wheelbases and two roof heights mean it’ll offer more versatility than the previous generation Combo.

Opel Combo (2012) Front Side 1

Vauxhall is only going to be offering UK buyers the panel van, which has up to either 3,800 or 4,600 litres of cargo space, depending on body size.

Opel customers across the rest of Europe will also be able to choose a passenger carrying version, with a glazed body and five or seven seats. Available in Essentia, Enjoy or Cosmo specification, its spec sheet will include a few extra luxuries such as rear electric windows, remote central locking and front side airbags.

Opel Combo (2012) Front Side 2

Unsurprisingly, the engine line-up is pretty much the same as that found in the Fiat Doblò. The Vauxhall Combo will be exclusively diesel-powered, with a pick of 1.3 litre (88 bhp / 66 kW / 90 PS), 1.6 litre (88 bhp / 66 kW / 90 PS), 1.6 litre (103 bhp / 77 kW / 105 PS) or 2.0 litre (133 bhp / 99 kW / 135 PS) capacities.

Additionally, Opel is to offer a 93 bhp (70 kW / 95 PS) 1.4 litre petrol, plus a 118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS) motor that runs on compressed natural gas.

Sales of the new Combo are due to start in February 2012. Prices have yet to be announced.

2012 Toyota Hilux facelift

The Toyota Hilux may currently account for almost a quarter of European pick-up sales, but new arrivals such as the Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 are set to provide strong competition.

So it might not be a coincidence that a facelifted Hilux has just been announced for 2012.

Toyota Hilux (2012) Front Side 1Toyota Hilux (2012) Front Side 2

Toyota Hilux (2012) InteriorToyota Hilux (2012) Rear Side

The changes start on the outside, where all the panels forward of the A pillar have been redesigned. There are also new wheels, door mirrors and rear wings.

Acknowledging that an increasing number of pick-up buyers want one as a ‘lifestyle’ vehicle, rather than just a workhorse, the inside has been suitably spruced up too. Featuring better quality materials, it gets a new upper dashboard that now houses the ‘Toyota Touch’ 6.1” touch screen multimedia system.

As before, there’ll be a choice of Single, Extra or Double cab styles and two- or all-wheel drive. The 2012 Hilux will be available in four trim levels, the DLX, DLX+, SR and SR+.

Under the bonnet, the 3.0 D-4D engine is carried over, although a diesel particulate filter now means it’s Euro V compliant.

The 2.5 D-4D motor also gets the filter, plus a new variable nozzle turbocharger which lifts power to 142 bhp (106 kW / 144 PS). However, fuel economy actually improves from 34.0 mpg (8.3 l/100km) to 38.6 mpg (7.3 l/100km), while CO2 emissions drop to 193 g/km.

Naturally though most potential buyers will be interested in the 1,453 litres of external load space, which is 239 litres up on the BT-50 Dual Cab thanks to the Freestyle’s longer cargo box.

The Mazda BT-50, which shares its underpinnings with the new Ford Ranger, is due to go on sale later this year. Public debut for the BT-50 Freestyle will be at the Australian International Motor Show, which takes place in Melbourne from the 1st to the 10th of July.

‘60 Years Unimog’ concept

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks has unveiled a unique concept to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first Unimog, which rolled off the production line in Gaggenau on 3rd June 1951.

Mercedes-Benz 60 Years Unimog Concept (2011) Front Side

Based on the current U 5000 model, the ‘60 Years Unimog’ has an open cab just like the original. The lurid green colour scheme is apparently inspired by the poison dart frog, while the Unimog’s trademark coil springs have been painted a contrasting shade of red. Aluminium trim on the exposed chassis and huge five-spoke ‘alu-rim’ wheels complete the visual effect.

Unfortunately the ‘60 Years Unimog’ isn’t a prototype for a production model, but Bertrand Janssen from Daimler’s commercial vehicle department stated: "On no account did we work in an atmosphere where our ideas were divorced from reality. Here we have a vehicle which is puristic, but still clearly true to concept - with the claim that some of its details will turn up in coming product ranges in future. We continued to take up the most important Unimog features which have characterised the vehicle for the last 60 years and which will also characterise it in future - features such as portal axles, coil springs or the frame concept."

VW Transporter Sportline

The desirable Sportline specification is returning to Volkswagen’s Transporter range.

Available on both the panel van and kombi, 2011 Sportline models get a purposeful look thanks to 18” alloy wheels, stainless steel side bars, a rear roof spoiler, revised headlights, a bespoke body-coloured front bumper and a black and chrome grille.

Finishing off the effect is a choice of Deep Black pearlescent, Reflex Silver metallic or Candy White paintwork, the last of which comes with a gloss black roof.

Volkswagen Transporter Sportline Panel Van (2011) Front Side

On the inside there’s two-tone leather upholstery, plus a generous equipment list that includes Bluetooth connectivity, a 7” touch screen with full European satellite navigation, electric windows and air conditioning.

But the Sportline isn’t just about appearances, as under the bonnet there’s a 2.0 litre BiTDI diesel engine that features twin turbochargers and common rail direct injection.

Producing 177 bhp (132 kW / 180 PS) and a very useful 400 Nm (295 lb/ft) of torque, it’s powerful enough to accelerate the six-speed manual panel van Sportline from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in just 9.9 seconds. Top speed is 119 mph (191 km/h).

The optional seven-speed DSG gearbox doesn’t really harm performance, but fuel economy and emissions do suffer slightly.

All of that power and kit comes at a cost though, with UK on-the-road prices starting at £28,220 (excluding VAT).

Ford Transit Connect EV

The European-specification Transit Connect Electric van has made its debut at the 2011 Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham. Developed in collaboration with Azure Dynamics Corporation, it will be the first Ford electric vehicle available in Europe when sales begin later this year.

Ford Transit Connect Electric (2011) Front Side

Based on the existing long-wheelbase Transit Connect, its lithium-ion battery pack offers 28 kWh of power. That’s enough for a range of around 80 miles (130 km) and a top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h), while recharging takes about eight hours.

By comparison, Renault claims that the electric Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E. will travel 105 miles (around 170 kilometres) before the battery runs out. Significantly, that’s approximately 30% more than the Ford, even though the Kangoo’s recharging time is similar.

Transit Connect Electric vans will be built in both left- and right-hand drive versions at the Ford Otosan plant in Kocaeli, Turkey. From there, they will be sent to the UK where Azure Dynamics will fit the ‘Force Drive’ powertrain components. Azure will also be responsible for selling the vehicle via a specially-created dealer network.

Although pricing has yet to be confirmed, Ford is chasing after fleet sales for the Transit Connect Electric. Post Norway has already placed an order for twenty, and other operators are said to have expressed an interest in the vehicle. Something that they’ll doubtless have to consider is the reduced payload of the electric version which, at 500 kg, is 388 kg less than an ordinary diesel-powered Transit Connect.

The public’s first chance to see it will be at this month’s Bangkok International Auto Show, a fitting location given that Thailand is the largest global territory for mid-size pickups, as well as being one of the countries where the Colorado is built.

Under the bonnet of the show truck sits a 2.8 litre turbo diesel engine. A broad torque band is promised from it, but specific output, performance or economy figures haven’t been disclosed yet.

Chevrolet claims that the interior will provide a premium environment. Whether certain features such as the ice-blue lighting make it to production remains to be seen, while others such as the leather trim and 7” LCD display screen will probably be consigned to the Colorado’s options list. The instrument panel has been designed to create a dual-cockpit feel, but the assertion that the instruments are motorcycle-inspired is probably stretching the hyperbole a bit too far.

Sales of the new Colorado are set to begin in Thailand before the end of the year. There’s no word from Chevrolet on whether it’ll make it to Europe, but expect launches in Australia and New Zealand under the Holden brand to replace the existing model sold in those markets.

Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E.

An inescapable issue for electric vehicles is battery cost. Not only can it have a considerable impact on the initial purchase price, but there’s also the financially unpleasant prospect of eventual replacement.

Government-backed schemes such as the UK’s Plug-in Car Grant can help with the former problem, but what if a manufacturer is trying to market an electric van, which currently isn’t eligible for such a helping hand?

Renault’s solution for its electric Kangoo Van Z.E. - as with its entire EV line-up - is that owners can buy or lease the vehicle itself, but the batteries will have to be rented.

In the UK, that means a monthly battery fee of at least £59 (plus VAT), based on 9,000 miles per annum and a 48 month commitment. Adding on maintenance plus the electricity needed to recharge the batteries, Renault reckons that overall running costs will be similar to those of a petrol or diesel equivalent if less than 9,375 miles (about 15,000 kilometres) are driven each year. Travel more than that, and it’s advantage electric.

When sales of the Kangoo Van Z.E. begin at the end of 2011, both standard and extended wheelbase Maxi versions will be available. What’s more, with an overall length of 4.60 metres, the Maxi is going to be offered in two guises.

First is a traditional two-seat van, which has 4.6 cubic metres of cargo space and a maximum load length of 2.90 metres. Alternatively, users could choose a five-seat version that comes with a 60/40 folding rear bench seat.

The Kangoo has a 59 bhp (44 kW / 60 PS) motor that’s powered by an under-floor 22 kWh battery. However, with an expected range of 105 miles (around 170 kilometres) and a recharging time of six to eight hours, operations are clearly going to be restricted to short, local journeys.

UK pricing for the Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E. has been set at £17,990 (plus VAT) for the two-seat version, or £18,690 (plus VAT) for the crew van version.

Think launches City van

Norwegian electric vehicle maker Think has added a new model to its range.

The City N van, which is based on the existing City car, has European type approval, a 237 kg load capacity and 700 litres of cargo space. It will be joined by the larger 900 litre capacity Compact van later this year, with the possibility of more variants to follow.

Short, urban journeys are likely to be all that the City N van is suited to, thanks to a 100 mile (160 km) range and an eight hour recharge time for its lithium-ion battery system. Its load lugging ability won’t be able to compete with establish petrol- or diesel-powered small vans, either. The Ford Fiesta Van, for example, can transport a payload of 507 kg.

However, for niche operations where there’s no need to travel great distances, the Think’s low running costs could prove advantageous.

One underlying issue that Think needs to sort out is its distribution network, as currently its vehicles are only available in the United States, Austria, the Netherlands and Norway. Progress on this is promised during 2011.

2011 Ford Ranger revealed

Pick-up trucks have never had the same sort of appeal in Europe as they do in other territories. Families seem to prefer the extra practicality of an SUV, while business users invariably choose vans to keep their stuff dry and secure.

There’s also the problem of image, which isn’t great. Maybe it’s the sort of people that drive pick-ups, or perhaps it’s the vehicles themselves - certainly the current Ford Ranger has virtually zero street cred. However, that’s something that could change with the 2011 model, which has just been unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

As part of the ‘One Ford’ initiative, the new Ranger will become Ford’s global compact pick-up, to be sold in 180 markets. Somewhat bizarrely though, that doesn’t include North America. Ford is saying that’s because the Ranger will be too close in size to its full-size F-150, although there must be plenty of people in the United States and Canada who don’t necessarily need or want such a large vehicle.

Developed in Melbourne, Australia, the 2011 Ranger is all-new from the ground up. Its chassis frame and suspension have been engineered for better off-road performance, offering up to 232 mm of ground clearance, while vulnerable drivetrain components have been mounted above the frame rails for better protection.

The styling is termed by Ford as ‘21st Century Tough’, and is meant to convey ‘taut, toned muscularity and a bold, confident stance [to] instantly signal the strength and capability of an ultra-modern pick-up’. Press release blurb aside, it certainly looks a lot better than any previous Ranger.

Engine choice for Europe will be a pair of Duratorq TDCi diesels. One is a four-cylinder 2.2 litre unit with 147 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS) and peak torque of 375 Nm, while the other has five cylinders and produces 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS) and 470 Nm from its 3.2 litres. Both come with an MT82 six-speed manual gearbox, although the Ford 6R80 six-speed automatic will also be available.

Other markets will additionally get the option of a 163 bhp (122 kW / 166 PS) 2.5 litre Duratec four-cylinder petrol engine, combined with an MT75 five-speed manual transmission.

An Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system will feature as standard, which includes yaw control, four-wheel traction control and roll-over mitigation. Optionally available will be Trailer Sway Mitigation, which selectively applies the brakes to help regain control, together with Adaptive Load Control which maintains a level ride height.

And ALC could be useful, as carrying capacity is improved over the previous generation Ranger. That’s partly thanks to a widened cargo box, which on the Double Cab model measures 1,549 mm long by 1,560 mm wide. With a height of 511 mm, that gives a total volume of 1.21 cubic metres. Width between the wheel arches is 1,139 mm, while the rear tailgate opening is 1.330 mm. Maximum payload will be up to 1,500 kg, depending on the model.

Anyone wanting a 2011 Ford Ranger will have to wait, though. Series production is not due to start at Ford’s Thailand facility until next summer, with additional capacity being provided later on by plants in South Africa and Argentina.

The plan is to commence deliveries to European customers ‘by 2012’ and, when it arrives, there’ll be three different cab styles, 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains, two ride heights and four trim levels.
