2012 Euro COTY nominees

The original thirty-five candidates for the 2012 European Car of the Year award have been whittled down to a list of seven nominees, following a first round of voting.

2012 European Car of the Year Nominees
Manufacturer Model
Citroën DS5
Fiat Panda
Ford Focus
Range Rover Evoque
Toyota Yaris
Vauxhall / Opel / Chevrolet Ampera / Volt
Volkswagen Up!

Given that there have been some dubious winners in the past (the Simca / Chrysler Horizon in 1979 and Fiat Bravo / Brava in 1996 are obvious examples), it’s good to see that the jury has decided on a strong group of finalists.

Perhaps the one exception is the Toyota Yaris, which really doesn’t deserve to triumph over any of the other six contenders. Arguably, the Citroën DS4 or even the Porsche 911 ought to have taken the Toyota’s place instead.

A second ballot will now take place to determine the overall winner, and the result will be revealed on 5 March 2012 at the Geneva Motor Show.

And which model should be named 2012 European Car of the Year? Either the Citroën DS5 or Range Rover Evoque.

Volt crash safety enhanced

Clearly keen not to put off potential purchasers or existing owners, General Motors has been swift in upgrading the crash performance of its Chevrolet Volt and Vauxhall / Opel Ampera range extenders.

The changes are designed to provide additional protection to the battery pack, in order to prevent a post-impact electrical fire.

They come in response to a crash test that was carried out in the United States by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration back in May 2011. That test caused battery coolant to leak, which in turn resulted in an electrical fire three weeks later. The NHTSA then replicated the situation under laboratory conditions, which caused a battery pack fire six days after.

Included in the modifications are a sensor for the battery coolant reservoir that monitors coolant levels, a tamper-resistant bracket for the reservoir to prevent coolant overfill and additional structural strengthening that should provide extra side-impact protection for the battery pack.

As well as being incorporated into the production process, the enhancements will also be retro-fitted to customers’ cars.

2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS

Despite its sporty appearance and turbocharged engine, the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS isn’t exactly a hot hatch.

Not that that’s the claim, though. To quote Chris Perry, Vice President of Global Chevrolet Marketing, the new arrival “takes the Sonic’s great design and latest connectivity features and combines them with a more performance-oriented look and feel.”

Chevrolet Sonic RS (2013) Front Side

So it’s unsurprising that outputs from the 1.4 litre Ecotec engine could best be described as adequate: maximum power is 138 bhp (103 kW / 139 PS), while peak torque is 200 Nm (148 lb/ft). But Chevrolet probably realises that many target customers are going to focus on economy as much as performance, although no figures have been released that would indicate how well that particular balance has been achieved.

For enhanced driving dynamics, the suspension is lowered and stiffened, while stopping ability should be improved thanks to the disc brakes that are fitted both front and rear.

Chevrolet Sonic RS (2013) Interior

The RS treatment also means a host of visual tweaks that work well on the already smart Sonic. Available as a five-door only, changes from the regular versions include a body kit, five-spoke 17” alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, a unique grille and a different finish for the door mirror caps.

Among the special interior features are sports seats, a thick-rimmed sports steering wheel and aluminium pedals. Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system also comes as standard. Based around a seven-inch touch screen and Bluetooth connectivity, this allows the driver to load music, listen to Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio and access navigation functions via their smart phone.

The Chevrolet Sonic RS will be seen in public for the first time at January’s North American International Auto Show. Sales are due to begin in late 2012.

Holden Volt tech specs

The Holden Volt has been revealed at a media event in Sydney, Australia. Essentially a re-badged version of Chevrolet’s extended range electric vehicle, sales are expected to begin in late 2012.

Holden Volt (2013) Front Side 1

Estimated range from its lithium-ion battery pack when driving in pure electric mode is a decent 80 km (50 miles). After that, the Volt’s petrol engine kicks in to act as an onboard generator that recharges the batteries and provides power to the electric drive system.

And therein lies the Holden’s USP - its Voltec drivetrain offers the environmental and running cost benefits of an electric car, but without any range anxiety.

Alternatively, the Volt can be recharged using a domestic 240V socket, a process which takes around four hours. So, with the right journey patterns and driving conditions, it should be possible to make the need to refuel with petrol a very rare occurrence.

Holden Volt (2013) SideHolden Volt (2013) Front

According to Mike Devereux, Holden Chairman and Managing Director, “Volt is the no compromise electric car. It’s electric when you want it and petrol when you need it.

“It’s among the most technologically advanced cars on the road anywhere in the world and spearheads Holden’s push to become a leader in technology and sustainable motoring. Volt will make driving more economical, more environmentally-friendly and will fundamentally change the way Australia thinks about alternative transport solutions.”

Camaro ZL1 performance

Two important pieces of information were missing when Chevrolet confirmed the specifications of its 2012 Camaro Coupe ZL1 back in September: price and performance.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2012) Front 2Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2012) Front Side 2

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2012) Rear Side 2Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2012) Side 2

Well, it has now been revealed that the former will be $54,995 (including $900 destination fee) in the United States, while the latter certainly lives up to expectations.

With the standard Tremec TR-6060 ‘MG9’ manual gearbox, the ZL1’s 580 bhp (432 kW / 588 PS) 6.2 litre supercharged V8 gets it from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.0 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 180 mph (289 km/h).

Go for the Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic transmission instead - a $1,185 cost option - and the ZL1 is actually slightly quicker. That 0-60 mph time is trimmed down to 3.9 seconds, and flat out it’ll do 184 mph (296 km/h). The quarter-mile takes exactly 12.0 seconds, 0.1 of a second faster than the manual version.

To put those figures into context, they’re on a par with exotica such as the Audi R8 4.2 FSI V8 (0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, top speed of 187 mph / 300 km/h), Porsche 911 Carrera S (4.3 seconds, 188 mph / 302 km/h) and the Maserati GranTurismo MC (4.8 seconds, 187 mph / 300 km/h).

Sales of the Chevrolet Camaro Coupe ZL1 are due to begin during spring 2012, with the Convertible ZL1 following in summer 2012 as a 2013 model.

Camaro Convertible ZL1

Chevrolet has announced that its Camaro ZL1 will be available as a convertible from late 2012.

The powertrain will be the same as the coupe’s, which means a 6.2 litre supercharged V8 engine producing a hefty 580 bhp (432 kW / 588 PS) and 754 Nm (556 lb/ft) of torque.

Chevrolet Camaro Convertible ZL1 (2013) Front Side 1Chevrolet Camaro Convertible ZL1 (2013) Rear Side

Ensuring all that power is delivered effectively to the road surface are Magnetic Ride Control 3.0, which uses magnetic particles inside the dampers to continually adjust the suspension, and Performance Traction Management, which combines MRC with the car’s traction control, electronic stability control and launch control systems.

Even those sophisticated chassis systems will be somewhat pointless if chopping the Camaro’s roof off leads to excessive body flex. However, Chevrolet reckons that won’t be a problem, thanks to extra reinforcement of the convertible’s bodyshell.

Measures taken include braces for the front and rear of the car, under the transmission tunnel and between the front suspension towers. There’s also additional strengthening incorporated into the sills, front hinge pillars and around the windscreen.

Consequently, it’s claimed that the open-top ZL1 will ‘preserve nearly all the acceleration, road-holding and performance capabilities’ of the coupe version.

Pricing for the 2013 Camaro Convertible ZL1 has yet to be confirmed.

Camaro ZL1 gets 580 bhp

Chevrolet has revealed the final specifications for the 2012 Camaro ZL1.

The headline figures for its 6.2 litre supercharged V8 engine are 580 bhp (432 kW / 588 PS) and 754 Nm (556 lb/ft) of torque, both of which are substantially higher than was originally expected.

As Chevrolet is understandably keen to point out, that’s more power than a Ferrari 458 Italia can muster - but it could have also mentioned that other exotica such as the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, Aston Martin Virage and Audi R8 V10 are similarly eclipsed by the Camaro in this respect.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2012) Front 2Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2012) Front Side 2
Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2012) Rear Side 2Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2012) Side 2

The ZL1’s huge outputs have been partly achieved due to improved airflow through both the supercharger housing and the air filter, a high efficiency intercooler, a performance fuel delivery system and the fitment of electric power steering that robs less power from the engine.

Drive to the rear wheels is via a Tremec TR-6060 ‘MG9’ manual gearbox, which comes equipped with a dual-mass flywheel and twin-disc clutch to help cope with all that torque.

For anyone who doesn’t like changing gears themselves, a specially strengthened Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic transmission is on the options list. It has three modes: economy-focussed Drive, the more aggressive Sport and Manual for extra control.

A potential problem is that so much grunt from an engine can be a liability if it’s not accompanied by a decent chassis set-up. However, Chevrolet claims it has that sorted too, thanks to Magnetic Ride Control 3.0.

MRC essentially allows for the suspension to continuously adapt to driving style and road conditions, so that (in theory at least) it always provides an optimum mix of ride and handling. Magnetised particles inside the dampers react when an electrical current is passed through them and, because that current can be varied 1,000 times per second, it means the ride stiffness is constantly being adjusted. Tour, Sport or Track settings are available.

The ZL1 also gets Performance Traction Management, which combines MRC with the car’s traction control, electronic stability control and launch control systems.

Depending on the conditions and driving ability, the driver can choose from one of five PTM modes. These each vary the degree of traction control, decide whether the stability control is on or off, and select the MRC setting.

On the face of it, the Camaro ZL1 seems like a serious performance car. Perhaps what’s needed is a head-to-head against the aforementioned Ferrari 458 Italia on both a quarter-mile strip and around a circuit to prove whether that’s the case?

Pricing has yet to be confirmed.

Malibu coming to Europe

The all-new Chevrolet Malibu will make its first European appearance at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, after which sales are due to begin in 2012.

It’ll be the first time the D-segment saloon has been offered here, and the move underlines the Malibu’s role as a true world car.

Chevrolet Malibu (2012) Front Side

But it’s a crowded market, and the question is how will the Malibu fit in? Perhaps a big clue comes from Wayne Brannon, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe, who said: “The Chevrolet Malibu is the brand's new top-of-the-range offering, bringing proven value with a premium feel to Europe's midsize segment.”

So, on that basis, likely rivals could include the Škoda Superb, Hyundai i40 and Toyota Avensis. Of course, depending on the perceived quality of the Malibu and its value for money, sales could also be stolen from slightly more expensive cars. That means models like the Citroën C5, Ford Mondeo, Peugeot 508, and - of course - the Vauxhall / Opel Insignia, a car that shares its Epsilon platform with the new Chevrolet.

.

And therein lies a growing problem for GM in Europe, as buyers increasingly struggle to work out the difference between the ‘budget’ Chevrolet brand and the supposedly more high-class Vauxhall and Opel.

It’s not like North America, for example, where there is more of a clear delineation between Buick and Chevrolet. Perhaps the Australians anticipated the issue, as there no attempt has been made to market Holden and Chevrolet side by side. Vehicles such as the Captiva, Cruze and Malibu simply wear Holden badges.

However, one advantage that the Insignia will have over the saloon-only Malibu is its wider choice of body styles. As well as a four-door, hatchback and estate versions of the Vauxhall / Opel contender are available, and those formats are both very popular in Europe.

The Chevrolet’s specification shouldn’t be lacking though, as all variants get a 7” touch screen radio display, eight airbags and electronic stability control. Depending on trim level, Bluetooth telephone connectivity, park distance control and a rear-view camera also feature, while satellite navigation is on the options list.

Whereas the North American-specification Malibu is powered by a 190 bhp (141 kW / 192 PS) 2.5 litre Ecotec four-cylinder engine connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, European models will have a completely different powertrain.

The choice on this side of the Atlantic is going to be either a 164 bhp (122 kW / 166 PS) 2.0 litre petrol or a 169 bhp (126 kW / 171 PS) diesel. Both are four-cylinder motors, and customers will be able opt for a manual or automatic gearbox.

Without doubt cost will be a major factor in determining whether the Malibu is a success in Europe, but for now there’s no word on pricing.

Diesel for American Cruze

North America is to get a diesel-powered Chevrolet Cruze, but not until 2013.

There’s no word yet on which engine will be used, but a likely candidate would have to be the 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbo diesel that’s already employed in the European-spec Cruze, as well as Holden’s version.

Developing 160 bhp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 360 Nm (265 lb/ft) of torque, it gets the six-speed manual Cruze from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.5 seconds and up to a maximum of 127 mph (204 km/h).

Alternatively (and probably of more interest to prospective North American consumers) there’s also a six-speed automatic transmission available. It slows the acceleration time by 0.9 of a second, but actually allows the top speed to rise by 2 mph.

Chevrolet Cruze LTZ (2011 North American Spec) Front Side

Whatever the power source that Chevrolet decides on, the big issue will be customer acceptance. The North American markets are notoriously resistant to diesel cars, despite an ability to deliver fuel economy that’s around twenty to thirty percent better than their gasoline equivalents. Indeed, research firm JD Power & Associates reckons that diesel sales will account for just 3.1 percent of the United States market in 2011, rising very slowly to 7.4 percent by 2017.

The best-selling diesel car in the US is currently Volkswagen’s Jetta, but significantly most of the Cruze’s other major competitors in the American compact segment - including the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra - don’t even bother with a diesel option in their ranges.

2012 Transformers Camaro

Casting a Camaro as the Autobot ‘Bumblebee’ in the Transformers movies has undoubtedly helped to raise the car’s profile. And now it’s back in ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’, the third film from the franchise.

To mark the reappearance (or to cash in on it, maybe?), Chevrolet has announced the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro Coupe.

Chevrolet Transformers Special Edition Camaro Coupe (2012 Rendering) Front Side

Chevrolet Transformers Special Edition Camaro Coupe (2012 Rendering) Interior

Essentially a $3,000 package for the Camaro Coupe 2LT and 2SS, content comprises the RS appearance pack (includes 20” alloy wheels, HID headlights and unique taillights), Autobot Shield logos, black stripes and a high-wing rear spoiler.

Naturally, the only body colour available is Rally Yellow, while the wheels are painted black. On the inside, there’s black leather upholstery with contrast yellow stitching, as well as more Autobot logos.

If all of that isn’t enough, buyers can upgrade to 21” wheels and the dealer-fit Ground Effects Package with its front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser.

In the US and Canada, orders for the Transformers Special Edition Camaro Coupe can be placed from next month. The first deliveries are then expected to follow in September.

Turbo cars lead BTCC

The 2011 British Touring Car Championship is now already midway through its season.

So far, it has been rather dominated by the contentious issue of performance parity between the turbocharged and normally-aspirated cars, although another boost reduction introduced for the most recent round at Croft seems to have helped a lot.

That said, the championship table remains dominated by cars running NGTC engines, with sixth-place Jason Plato in his Chevrolet Cruze seemingly the only non-turbo entrant with any realistic prospect of taking the title.

Top 10: Low insurance cars

For many prospective buyers in today’s market, the question of which new cars are cheapest to insure is a critical one.

In the UK, finding the answer is made easier because all models are placed at launch into one of fifty advisory groups, with the idea being that cars in Group 1 should attract the lowest premiums, and those in Group 50 the highest.

Deciding which vehicles go into each group falls to the Association of British Insurers, working with the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre at Thatcham. The allocation process takes into account things like parts costs, repair times, performance and security.

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many new cars that fall into Group 1 or Group 2. In fact, the total number is ten, and here they are listed alphabetically by manufacturer:

Chevrolet Spark 1.0  (Group 1E)

At £7,215 on the road, the base Spark is one of the cheapest cars on sale in the UK. That’s enough to buy eye-catching styling and a five-door body, with little else besides. Customers wanting electric windows, central locking, air conditioning or an audio system have to look higher up the Spark range, but more kit means a higher insurance group.

Chevrolet Spark (2011) Front Side

The Chevrolet’s four cylinder, one litre engine produces 67 bhp (50 kW / 68 PS) and 93 Nm (68 lb/ft) of torque, giving a top speed of 96 mph (154 km/h). Average fuel consumption is a reasonable 55.4 mpg (5.1 l/100km).

Image © GM Corp.

Citroën C1 1.0 VT  (Group 2E)

Unlike anything from the closely related Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo line-ups, a Citroën C1 makes it into Group 2. However, the downside is that it’s the basic VT spec, so owners miss out on niceties such as electric windows and air conditioning.

Citroen C1 (2009) Front Side

Max power from the three cylinder engine is 67 bhp (50 kW / 68 PS), which is enough to propel the C1 from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 13.3 seconds. Such brisk performance doesn’t come at the expense of efficiency though, as it’ll average 62.8 mpg (4.5 l/100km) with CO2 emissions of just 103 g/km. Prices are £8,695 for the three-door, or £9,045 for the five-door.

Fiat Qubo Active 1.4  (Group 2E)

Possibly the biggest (literally) surprise amongst all the models here is the Qubo, a van-derived mini MPV. The Fiat’s looks may divide opinion, but there’s no doubting that at £10,705 on the road it’s a lot of metal for the money. Equipment levels are fairly generous too, with the Blue&Me Bluetooth / USB connectivity system and four airbags coming as standard with the basic Active trim grade.

Fiat Qubo Active (2009) Front Side

Although it has a 1.4 petrol engine, it’s by no means a performance car. 0-62 mph (100 km/h) takes a lethargic 16.2 seconds, while the claimed top speed is 97 mph (156 km/h). Combined cycle fuel consumption of 42.2 mpg (6.7 l/100km) is reasonably good, given the Qubo’s relative bulk.

Nissan Pixo Visia 1.0  (Group 2E)

Nissan recently reduced the price of the Pixo Visia from £7,350 to £6,995, thereby undercutting the Chevrolet Spark. Predictably for that amount of money the windows have to be wound up and down manually, the doors locked individually and there are only two airbags. At least the Visia gets a CD player, though.

Nissan Pixo (2011) Rear Side

The Pixo’s 996 cc three cylinder engine generates 67 bhp (50 kW / 68 PS), and it’ll achieve a very impressive 64.2 mpg (4.4 l/100km) while emitting 103 g/km of CO2.

Nissan Pixo Acenta 1.0  (Group 2E)

The £8,100 Acenta trim grade has only just been dropped from the Nissan price list, effectively replaced by the n-tec version which falls into a higher insurance group. However, there might be some Acenta models still at dealers awaiting buyers.

Toyota Yaris T2 1.0 VVT-i  (Group 2E)

Surprisingly, the entry-level Yaris falls into a lower insurance group than the smaller Aygo. Air conditioning and extra airbags are absent from the T2 version, but it does get electric windows, electrically adjustable door mirrors and a four-speaker stereo with steering wheel mounted controls.

Toyota Yaris (2009) Front Side

Power comes from a three cylinder, one litre engine producing 68 bhp (51 kW / 69 PS), which is not a lot for a supermini. Consequently, it’s no great surprise that the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes a sluggish 15.7 seconds, but the compensation is decent average fuel consumption of 55.4 mpg (5.1 l/100km). The Yaris T2 is priced at £10,730 in three-door form, with the five-door costing £500 more.

Vauxhall Corsa Expression 1.0 ecoFlex  (Group 2E)

Costing £9,995 and only available as a three-door, as expected the standard equipment list for the Corsa Expression is sparse.

In common with many of the cars listed here, under the bonnet lurks a one litre, three cylinder engine. With an output of 64 bhp (48 kW / 65 PS), it’ll do 56.5 mpg (5.0 l/100km) with CO2 emissions of 117 g/km.

Vauxhall Corsa S 1.0 ecoFlex  (Group 2E)

Mechanically the same as the Expression, the slightly posher ‘S’ gets electric front windows and remote central locking, but there’s still no air conditioning.

Vauxhall Corsa 5-Door (2011) Rear Side

It costs £11,625 on the road for the three-door, although the ‘Vauxhall Internet Price’ is currently £9,895, which actually makes the lead-in Expression superfluous. For more practicality, the five-door retails at £12,050 (with a ‘Vauxhall Internet Price’ of £10,730).

Image © GM Corp.

Volkswagen Fox 1.2  (Group 1E)

The trump card for Volkswagen’s Brazilian-built entry level model is plenty of cabin space, thanks to a body that’s taller than a Polo’s and almost as wide. Interior trim quality and equipment levels might not be up to Phaeton standards, but then the Fox does currently cost just £7,295 on the road.

Volkswagen Fox (2011) Side

A recently reworked 1.2 litre engine provides 59 bhp (44 kW / 60 PS) and a useful 108 Nm (80 lb/ft) of torque, but the Fox tops out at 95 mph (152 km/h). Fuel consumption of 48.7 mpg (5.8 l/100km) isn’t outstanding against the competition, and CO2 emissions of 136g/km are disappointing.

Volkswagen Urban Fox 1.2  (Group 1E)

Sharing its engine with the basic Fox, the Urban version is differentiated by having some extra goodies. These include electric windows, remote central locking, a split folding rear seat and body coloured bumpers. The retail price for the Urban Fox is £8,030.

Or perhaps not, because although some elements of the SC-1’s styling work, the overall effect is neither pretty nor cohesive. There’s a slim chance it’ll look better in the metal, but that’s more in hope than expectation.

What makes the situation worse is that the coachbuilt Endora fails to be more desirable than the car it’s based on, the Chevrolet Corvette.

But at least that means a decent engine line-up, including the supercharged 6.2 litre (378.3 cu.in.) V8 from the ZR1, with its 638 bhp (475 kW / 646 PS) and 818 Nm (604 lb/ft) of torque.

World Car Awards winners

Last November it was declared the 2011 European Car of the Year, and now the Nissan Leaf has been named 2011 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show. Occupying the runners-up slots were the two other short-listed models, the BMW 5 Series and Audi A8.

2011 World Performance Car winner was the Ferrari 458 Italia, an unsurprising victory even though it was up against the talented Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Porsche 911 Turbo.

Another predictable (but deserved) result was that the 2011 World Car Design of the Year title went to the Aston Martin Rapide, which beat the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Ferrari 458 Italia.

The Nissan Leaf was also a finalist in the 2011 World Green Car category. However, it lost out to the Chevrolet Volt which, with its range-extender technology, is undoubtedly a much more practical proposition for many drivers. Even so, the Leaf’s environmental credentials must have helped it to secure the main prize, so perhaps the outcome seems rather inconsistent? The third finalist for this award was the BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition.

Centennial Edition Corvette

Chevrolet is celebrating its 100th anniversary by launching the 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette. Essentially an appearance package, it will be available on all current Corvette variants, including the ZR1.

Distinguishing the Centennial Edition is Carbon Flash Metallic paintwork, satin black aluminium wheels (19” front / 20” rear for the Z06 and ZR1-based versions, 18” front / 19” rear for everything else), red brake callipers, satin black graphics and a unique Corvette badge. Magnetic Selective Ride Control is also included in the specification.

The black colour theme continues on the inside, where the instrument panel and doors are covered in Ebony leather, and the seats are upholstered in the same leather with suede micro-fibre inserts. Completing the look is plenty of red stitching and embossed centennial logos on the headrests.

Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but the 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette will be available in dealers this summer.

Before that though, a Z06 Centennial Edition - the 100th 2012 Corvette produced - is going to be put up for auction at the Barrett-Jackson event in West Palm Beach, Florida, on the 9th of April. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer.

2011 BTCC Chevy Cruze

Silverline Chevrolet, the works outfit run by RML, has unveiled its new livery for the 2011 British Touring Car Championship. The new paintjob is similar to that also being used on the team’s WTCC contenders.

While some BTCC competitors are going to be fielding cars compliant with the new Next Generation Touring Car regulations, the Cruze racers remain in Super 2000 specification for this season.

Behind the wheel of the #1 Chevrolet will be reigning driver’s champion Jason Plato, who has decided to stay with the team to defend his title. Completing the unchanged driver line-up is team mate Alex MacDowall in the #20 car.

2011 BTCC entries

2011 will see the biggest grid ever for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship since it switched to a two-litre formula. Despite the presence of only two full factory teams - Silverline Chevrolet and Honda Racing Team - ten manufacturers will be represented this season, including newcomers Audi, Proton and Toyota.

The boosted entry list is mainly down to the introduction of the Next Generation Touring Car technical regulations, which have been brought in to slash car development and running costs. Most of those savings will be achieved through the use of standardised parts including brakes, suspension and gearboxes. Using durable two-litre turbocharged engines in the NGTCs should help make the BTCC more affordable, too.

This year starts a period of transition, with the intention being that existing Super 2000-spec cars should have equal performance to the NGTC entries for the next two seasons, after which the latter will become dominant.

Good news for spectators is that children will get free admission at every round, while pit lane autograph sessions will continue to be a popular feature of race day.

For television viewers, the live package shown on ITV4 and ITV4 HD is going to be six to seven hours long, backed up by a one-hour highlights programme shown later on ITV1 and ITV4. Excellent terrestrial coverage that other championships would do well to emulate (WRC, that means you…).

The opening race of the series is at Brands Hatch on the 3rd of April.
