Bentley has gone green (sort of) by announcing the Continental GT and GTC V8.
Due to be revealed at the North American International Auto Show in January, the new twin-turbo engine displaces 4.0 litres and produces 500 bhp (373 kW / 507 PS) and 660 Nm (487 lb/ft) of peak torque.
Tellingly, those outputs aren’t too far behind the 567 bhp (423 kW / 575 PS) and 700 Nm (516 lb/ft) of the existing 6.0 W12 Continental, which remains in the range.
It’s a similar story with performance: the V8’s eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system allow for a 4.6 second 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time and a top speed of 188 mph (303 km/h).
By contrast, the W12 takes 4.4 seconds to get to 60 mph and can reach 198 mph (318 km/h). On that basis at least, it seems there’s not much difference between the two models.
But it’s fuel consumption and emissions where the new V8 is really meant to score over its larger-engine sibling - indeed, Bentley is claiming that the 4.0 litre powertrain fulfils the firm’s promise to deliver a 40 per cent improvement in efficiency.
Certainly that seems to be the case regarding CO2 emissions, as the V8 GT coupé achieves 246 g/km compared to the W12’s 384 g/km.
For some reason, fuel consumption figures won’t be released until early next year. However, the Continental V8 is supposed to be able to drive over 500 miles (800 km) on a single tank of fuel, thanks in part to a V4 mode that kicks in when cruising or under light throttle loads, low friction engine internals and an energy regeneration system.
Assuming the V8’s tank size remains at 20 gallons (90 litres), that would give an average consumption figure of around 25 mpg (11.3 l/100km). So, with the Continental W12 managing just 17.1 mpg (16.5 l/100km) on the EU combined cycle, it looks like that 40 per cent target could well be met.
The V8 version is distinguished by its gloss black grille, red enamel Bentley badges, twin ‘figure eight’ exhaust pipes, revised front bumper design and dark rear lower valence. On the inside, there’s a shorter centre console, Eliade cloth headlining and a unique Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus wood veneer.
Pricing has yet to be confirmed.

Bentley Mulliner Styling
Undoubtedly aware that some aftermarket firms are doing fairly hideous things to its products, Bentley has taken an ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ approach by launching Mulliner Styling Specification upgrades for the current Continental GT.
Although the end result manages to be quite understated, it doesn’t come cheap…
For instance, buyers will have to part with £7,540 for the Classic Pack. This comprises a front bumper splitter, lower intake grille strakes, side skirts and a rear diffuser, all of which are made from carbon fibre.
But to get the full effect, Bentley is also offering a range of individual Mulliner options. There are yet more carbon fibre trinkets, in the shape of door mirror caps (at a shocking £2,241) and a rear spoiler that costs the same again.
The curved wing vents, which sit just behind the front wheels, are constructed from dark chrome mesh with carbon fibre bezels. Priced at £4,762, they’re claimed to help heat diffusion, presumably from the brakes.
Finally, the standard wheels can be swapped for 21” Elegant alloys which have a contrasting black and machined finish, and cost £5,940.
The Classic Pack can be ordered via Bentley dealers now, while the optional features will be available from this autumn. Customers who go for everything will face a hefty bill of £22,724.

Bentley Continental GT World Speed Record on Ice
In early 2007, a Bentley Continental GT Speed, driven by four-time World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen, broke the World Speed Record on Ice - on the frozen Baltic Sea near Oulu, Finland. It averaged 321.6 kilometres per hour (199.83 mph) in both directions on the "flying kilometre", reaching a maximum speed of 331 km/h (205.67 mph). The previous record was 296 km/h (183.9 mph), achieved with a Bugatti EB110 Supersport.
The record-breaking Bentley was largely standard except for a roll-cage, aerodynamic improvements, and low-temperature fuel and calibration.

Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed
For 2009, Bentley introduced a Continental Flying Spur Speed model. Similar to the Continental GT Speed, engine output has been increased to 610 metric horsepower (449 kW; 602 bhp) at 6,000 rpm and 750 newton metres (553 ft·lbf) at 1,700-5,600 rpm - with a top speed of 322 kilometres per hour (200 mph) (up from 194 mph), making it the world's fastest four-door saloon.
Acceleration time from 0–100 kilometres per hour (0–62.1 mph) is now 4.8 seconds. It features enlarged disc brakes, and an upgraded Bosch ESP 8.1 Electronic Stability Programme. With the revised Carbon Ceramic brakes Bentley claims that the flying spur speed will stop from 100 kph (60 mph) in 33 meters (109 feet). Bentley also claims that the flying spur with its revised esp system and suspension the flying spur speed is capable of handling .95 g-forces of lateral acceleration on a 300 foot skidpad.
